UGC Plans to Accelerate Degree Completion for Undergraduates

Students may soon finish 3-year programs in 2.5 years and 4-year courses in 3 years, pending implementation in 2025.

The University Grants Commission (UGC) is considering allowing students to complete undergraduate degrees faster, potentially saving six months to a year.
This proposal, recommended by a committee led by IIT Madras Director V Kamakoti, aligns with the National Education Policy 2020's goals for flexible education.
The new structure will also accommodate students who need more time, offering flexible entry and exit points to cater to individual circumstances.
While the plan aims to enhance educational flexibility, some academics express concerns about potential impacts on academic quality and course content depth.
Detailed guidelines for the implementation of this accelerated program are expected to be released soon, with a target rollout in the 2025-26 academic year.
