Overview

• The UGC issued show-cause notices to 89 higher-education institutions for failing to secure required anti-ragging undertakings from students and their guardians under the 2009 regulations.
• Defaulters include four Indian Institutes of Technology—Bombay, Kharagpur, Palakkad and Hyderabad—and three Indian Institutes of Management—Bombay, Rohtak and Tiruchirapalli.
• Other notable Institutes of National Importance on the list include AIIMS Raebareli, Aligarh Muslim University, NIPER Hyderabad and Indira Gandhi National Open University.
• UGC Secretary Manish Joshi said the institutions disregarded multiple advisories, helpline follow-ups and direct interventions by the Anti-Ragging Monitoring Agency.
• Institutions that do not comply within the 30-day deadline risk withdrawal of UGC grants, cuts to research funding and possible derecognition.
