UGC Approves Flexible Undergraduate Degree Durations
Students in India may soon have the option to complete their undergraduate degrees in shorter or extended durations, with draft norms open for feedback.
- The University Grants Commission (UGC) has approved guidelines for Accelerated Degree Programmes (ADP) and Extended Degree Programmes (EDP) for undergraduate students.
- Students can choose to complete a three- or four-year degree faster by earning additional credits per semester or extend the duration with fewer credits per semester.
- Degrees completed under these flexible timelines will be treated as equivalent to standard-duration degrees for academic and employment purposes.
- Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) will establish committees to evaluate student eligibility for these programmes, with up to 10% of seats allocated for ADP.
- The draft guidelines will now be released for public feedback before formal implementation by institutions.
