Uganda Charges 100+ Opposition Supporters After Museveni’s 71.65% Election Victory

International scrutiny intensifies over blackouts that opponents say undermined transparency.

Overview

  • Uganda’s Electoral Commission declared Yoweri Museveni the winner with 7,946,772 votes (71.65%) to Bobi Wine’s 2,741,238 (24.72%) on turnout of about 52.5%.
  • The National Unity Platform rejected the result and alleged irregularities, and police denied detaining Wine after he said he fled a raid on his home.
  • At least 118 NUP members were charged in Kampala with offences including unlawful assembly, conspiracy and unlawful possession of election materials, according to court documents.
  • Military chief Muhoozi Kainerugaba posted threats and gave Wine 48 hours to surrender, even as a police spokesperson said Wine was not being sought.
  • The European Parliament debated sanctions and the UN human rights office criticized the internet shutdown, AFP debunked a viral ballot‑stuffing video as footage from 2016, and Rwanda’s Paul Kagame publicly congratulated Museveni.
