UFS, Student Leaders Reach Two‑Year Deal to Phase Out Provisional Registration

The pact retains capped debt allowances for 2026–2027 to bridge to a new financial support system.

Overview

  • Provisional registration will be withdrawn over 2026–2027 under a memorandum between the university executive and combined student councils.
  • Students with debt up to R70,000 in the first year and R60,000 in the second year will be allowed to register during the transition.
  • All registered students will be able to obtain official academic records regardless of outstanding balances.
  • UFS obtained an interim court order restricting unlawful protest actions across all campuses, which remains in force pending a final ruling.
  • Days of unrest prompted campus closures and injuries to staff and security, the Qwaqwa campus stays shut with academic activity suspended, and reactions are split as the SRC welcomes the reprieve while some students object and the higher education minister monitors the situation.
