UFC-Que Choisir Says Halloween Candy Carries Steep Markups in New Price Study

The group reports that 2025 soda price increases surpass the effect of the March tax.

Overview

  • The consumer association analyzed 105 references with online prices collected on October 21 and published its findings on October 28.
  • Halloween-branded packs cost far more than standard versions, including Dragibus priced 43% higher per kilo and assorted gummies about 32% higher.
  • Confectionery prices are down about 3% this year compared with 2024, which does not offset the 18% jump recorded in 2023 when sugar costs spiked.
  • Sodas cost roughly 16% more year over year, with private-label cola bottles rising from about €0.96 to €1.52 on average despite a €0.27 tax increase per bottle.
  • UFC-Que Choisir’s analyst says roughly half of the cola hike reflects the tax and the remainder stems from pricing by brands and retailers, while Haribo cites added costs for limited Halloween editions.
