UDISE+ 2024–25: India’s School Teachers Top One Crore as Ratios Improve and Dropouts Decline

Officials call for converting recent input gains into measurable learning outcomes.

Overview

  • Teacher strength reached 1,01,22,420 in 2024–25, up from 94,83,294 in 2022–23, a 6.7% rise, according to the education ministry’s UDISE+ report.
  • Pupil–teacher ratios are now reported as 10 at foundational, 13 at preparatory, 17 at middle and 21 at secondary levels, comparing favorably with the NEP’s 1:30 benchmark.
  • Dropout rates fell year over year to 2.3% at preparatory, 3.5% at middle and 8.2% at secondary, while retention rose to 98.9%, 92.4%, 82.8% and 47.2% across the four stages.
  • Digital access improved with 64.7% of schools having computers and 63.5% internet connectivity, alongside higher coverage of electricity (93.6%), safe drinking water (99.3%), handwashing (95.9%) and girls’ toilets (97.3%).
  • Single-teacher schools decreased to 104,125 and zero-enrolment schools to 7,993, with female teachers now at 54.2% and girls’ enrolment at 48.3%.
