UDISE+ 2024–25 Finds Teacher Workforce Above 1 Crore With Stronger Pupil–Teacher Ratios

Officials say a seven-year low in enrolment reflects falling birth rates.

Overview

  • India counted 1,01,22,420 school teachers in 2024–25, up 6.7% from 2022–23, with pupil–teacher ratios now at 10 (foundational), 13 (preparatory), 17 (middle) and 21 (secondary).
  • Total enrolment fell by about 11 lakh to roughly 24.68–24.69 crore, with the sharpest decline at the primary level where Classes 1–5 lost about 34 lakh students.
  • Government school enrolment dropped to 12.16 crore as private schools rose to 9.59 crore, extending a multi-year shift toward private education.
  • Dropout rates declined to 2.3% (preparatory), 3.5% (middle) and 8.2% (secondary), retention improved across stages, and GER rose at middle and secondary levels.
  • Single-teacher schools fell by around 6% and zero-enrolment schools by about 38%, while infrastructure and digital access improved, with computers in 64.7% of schools and internet in 63.5%.
