Overview
- K. H. Sudheer Khan of the UDF won Vizhinjam by 83 votes, polling 2,902 to CPI(M) candidate N. A. Noushad’s 2,819.
- BJP candidate Sarvashakthipuram Binu finished third with 2,437 votes, while LDF rebel N. A. Rasheed drew 118 votes that proved pivotal given the narrow margin.
- The result lifts the UDF’s tally in the 101-member Corporation to 20 seats and leaves the NDA at 50, one short of a simple majority.
- Turnout in the rescheduled poll was 66.97%, with 8,912 of 13,307 registered voters casting ballots, according to the State Election Commission.
- The bypoll followed earlier turmoil over standing committees, with only three of eight formed on January 7 and BJP-triggered vacancies now to be reported to the election commission ahead of chairperson elections.
