UCLA Lands $17.3 Million Bequest From Larry Layne for Football and Men’s Basketball

The gift forms part of a pledge exceeding $40 million across UCLA during a push to bolster athletics finances.

Overview

  • $9.6 million is designated for football and $7.7 million for men’s basketball, according to UCLA.
  • Layne’s broader pledge directs $11.4 million to UCLA Health, $5.7 million to the Anderson School, $3.8 million to men’s rugby, and $1.9 million to the Center for the Art of Performance.
  • The bequest was announced as the department seeks new revenue sources after $219.55 million in debt over six fiscal years, which the university says it has covered to a zero balance.
  • Layne, a former UCLA rugby player and women’s rugby coach who died in December 2024, made nearly 100 athletic donations totaling about $18.8 million over his lifetime.
  • UCLA also reported two transfer additions, offensive lineman Mack Indestad and linebacker Samuel “Sammy” Omosigho, both signed and admitted to the university.
