UC San Diego Admitted to West Coast Conference, Entry Set for 2027

The addition signals a reshaped league following Gonzaga's departure by welcoming a prominent public research campus.

Overview

  • UC San Diego accepted an invitation to place most teams in the WCC starting July 1, 2027, competing in 14 of the league’s 16 sponsored sports.
  • The membership change will give the WCC 10 schools in 2027–28 as the league adjusts after Gonzaga’s move to the Pac-12 and Seattle’s recent addition.
  • UCSD sponsors 24 sports overall and will seek conference affiliations for the 10 programs not covered by WCC sponsorship.
  • The Tritons finished their Division I transition in 2024 and reached the NCAA tournaments in both men’s and women’s basketball in their first eligible season.
  • UCSD becomes the WCC’s first public member since Nevada-Reno departed in 1979, expanding the conference’s California-heavy footprint.
