UC Berkeley Student Identified as George Mauricio Salinas in Suspected Fraternity Pool Drowning

Prosecutors are reviewing possible charges over alleged furnishing of alcohol to minors.

Overview

  • The Alameda County Coroner’s Bureau identified the 19-year-old as George Mauricio Salinas of San Diego, who died Nov. 17 after several days in critical condition at Highland Hospital.
  • Police responded to a late-night 911 call on Nov. 14 at a Prospect Street fraternity house and reported a crowd of more than 300 with overcrowding and heavy alcohol use around the pool.
  • Officials said foul play is not suspected, and the coroner has not released an official cause of death.
  • Within about 90 minutes, Berkeley police posted a public nuisance notice at the house, and the fire department cited the event for exceeding the 200-person limit and revoked a permit for a later weekend event.
  • Alpha Delta Phi’s national office said it suspended the Berkeley chapter, and police said the district attorney is weighing a case involving the chapter’s safety coordinator for allegedly supplying alcohol to minors.
