UBS to Pay €835 Million to End French Tax-Evasion Case

The deal uses France’s CRPC plea procedure to close a 14-year case over illegal client solicitation.

Overview

  • The settlement comprises a €730 million criminal fine plus €105 million in civil damages to the French state.
  • The agreement, reached under a comparution sur reconnaissance préalable de culpabilité, ends the prosecutions and cancels a planned third trial in Paris.
  • UBS said the payment is fully covered by existing provisions.
  • Paris prosecutor general Marie-Suzanne Le Quéau said the penalty reflects that implicated taxpayers have paid the evaded taxes and related penalties.
  • Earlier rulings set penalties at €3.7 billion in 2019 and €1.8 billion in 2021 before the Cour de cassation in 2023 upheld guilt for 2004–2012 conduct but ordered a new trial limited to penalties and compensation.
