Uber Eats Launches Doorstep Retail Returns With Instant Refunds

The move pushes Uber deeper into retail logistics to keep users in its app.

Overview

  • Uber Eats, which introduced the feature Friday, now lets customers schedule a courier to pick up eligible retail items and triggers a refund as soon as the pickup happens.
  • The rollout covers thousands of U.S. store locations at launch, with named partners including Best Buy, Dick’s Sporting Goods, Petco, PacSun, Pet Food Express, At Home, GNC, Michael’s and Target.
  • Returns apply only to items priced at $20 or more and must follow each retailer’s policy, and customers pay a courier fee that the app calculates by time and distance.
  • Refunds include the item price, taxes and Uber Eats service fees, though the original delivery fee and any tips are not refunded, and customers can always drop items at the store to avoid the courier charge.
  • Unlike Uber’s earlier package-drop service that sent sealed parcels to UPS or FedEx, the new option accepts unpackaged goods and routes them straight back to the retailer, a step Uber frames as part of a delivery business that recently topped a $100 billion annualized bookings pace and $4.9 billion in quarterly revenue.
