Overview
- Police responded to a two-vehicle collision at Eight Mile Road and Coolidge Highway late Thursday night and found a Buick that had to be extricated and a damaged Dodge Charger.
- The Buick driver, who was working as an Uber driver, was cut out of the vehicle by responders and later died at a hospital while a 23-year-old rear-seat passenger was ejected and remains in critical condition.
- Oak Park investigators say preliminary findings and nearby surveillance show the Charger ran a red light and the 19-year-old Charger driver was taken into custody on suspicion of impairment.
- Around 1 a.m. while officers were still on scene, a separate driver rear-ended a Berkley patrol car and was arrested on suspicion of DUI with a preliminary blood alcohol level about three times the legal limit; Berkley released video of that rear-end crash.
- Evidence from the crash scene and video will be compiled for the Oakland County Prosecutor’s Office and police have asked the public for tips as charging decisions and the active investigation move forward.
