Uber Driver Arrested After Driving Off With Infant From Florida Preschool

Police say the driver told them he believed he was delivering an empty car seat to an address in the app.

Overview

  • Palm Springs police arrested 26-year-old Nathan E. Velez on a felony charge of false imprisonment of a child under 13 and booked him into Palm Beach County Jail.
  • Officers received a call around 4:58 p.m. after a car left the Palm Beach Pre-School parking lot with a six-month-old in a car seat in the back of a white Tesla.
  • The mother, identified as Mikeria L. Evans, had placed the baby in the back seat and left the rear door open while retrieving her other child when a daycare employee saw the vehicle depart.
  • After Evans reached Velez by phone roughly 20 minutes later, he returned to the preschool, and paramedics evaluated the infant and found the child in good health.
  • According to the probable cause affidavit, Velez acknowledged seeing the car seat, called it a mistake not to check for a child, and the case now awaits further legal proceedings.
