Uber Cuts About 10% of Staff in Major Reorganization

Designed to speed decision-making, the plan centralizes staff in New York and San Francisco to redirect savings toward drivers and robotaxi investments.

Overview

  • Uber, which announced the changes on Wednesday, will eliminate roughly 3,300 roles from a global workforce of about 34,000, reducing headcount to near 30,000.
  • The company will cut managers by about 20% and shrink very small teams and deep hierarchical layers to speed decisions and reduce coordination delays.
  • Global teams will be concentrated in New York and San Francisco, most remote workers will be asked to relocate, fully remote roles will be limited to about 1%, and a three-day in-office policy remains.
  • Uber said it will exit operations in Nigeria and Uganda, and plans to reinvest the savings in drivers, partners and large autonomous-vehicle programs that include reported commitments to robotaxi partnerships.
  • The move produced a modest market boost, with Uber shares rising about 2% in pre-market trading, and it returns the company to a leaner staffing level similar to 2021 as tech firms tighten structures.
