Uber and 99 to Restart Motorcycle Rides in São Paulo on December 11

The return follows an STF decision that voided a state law empowering city bans.

Overview

  • The relaunch comes one day after the TJSP deadline for Mayor Ricardo Nunes to issue municipal rules for the service.
  • Last week the Supreme Federal Court suspended a São Paulo state law that let municipalities authorize or prohibit moto-apps, curbing local power to ban the service.
  • In a joint letter, the companies said that with judicial authorizations in place there is no reason to wait to resume operations.
  • The firms set five commitments for their return: anonymized data sharing, driver certification, safety training, reflective gear distribution, and telemetric risk monitoring.
  • São Paulo’s City Hall criticized the STF ruling as lacking sensitivity to traffic safety concerns and has not published a final regulation.
