Overview
- FlyDubai flight FZ1073, which transmitted emergency codes on September 30, plunged more than four kilometers after the second pilot allegedly attacked Captain Smith Machchar with an emergency axe.
- Despite serious wounds, Captain Machchar opened the cockpit door, passengers and crew restrained the attacker, and a reserve FlyDubai crew regained control and made an emergency landing in Tabuk, Saudi Arabia with all 174 passengers and eight crew surviving.
- The UAE Public Prosecutor on October 3 formally classified the episode as a planned and attempted terrorist attack and said investigators are examining motives, possible links, and physical and digital evidence.
- Media reports identified the detained suspect as 29-year-old Omani national Hamam Al-Hammami, but authorities have not publicly confirmed ideological ties or state sponsorship and say final findings await technical work.
- The injured captain is receiving treatment in Abu Dhabi and spoke by video with India’s prime minister on October 2, and the case has prompted public statements from Israeli and some U.S. officials that have not been verified by the UAE investigation.
