UAE Extends Emirates ID Renewal Window to One Year

ICP says the change will cut duplicate steps by enabling coordinated passport and ID renewals as part of the Zero Government Bureaucracy Programme

Overview

  • The Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs and Port Security implemented the new rule on July 14, 2026, allowing citizens to renew their Emirates ID up to one year before it expires.
  • When a passport and an Emirates ID share the same expiry date, holders can now complete both renewals in a single, integrated transaction to save time and reduce repeated procedures.
  • ICP director general Major General Suhail Saeed Al Khaili framed the move as a directive from UAE leadership to offer greater flexibility and improve citizens’ quality of life.
  • The Emirates ID is mandatory for accessing bank accounts, driving licences and government services, so the longer renewal window is intended to lower last-minute renewals and ease everyday transactions.
  • The authority says the change complements an earlier one-year passport renewal rule and fits the UAE’s push for digital, AI-enabled services that shift from separate processes to integrated government offerings.
