UAE Commits to Halting Arms Transfers to Sudan’s RSF

U.S. lawmakers drop opposition to $1.2 billion arms deal after UAE pledges to cease support for Sudanese paramilitary group.

  • The UAE has assured the U.S. it is no longer supplying weapons to Sudan's Rapid Support Forces (RSF) and will not do so in the future, according to a White House letter to lawmakers.
  • Senators Chris Van Hollen and Sara Jacobs, who had sought to block a $1.2 billion U.S. arms sale to the UAE, have agreed to withdraw their opposition but will monitor compliance closely.
  • The Biden administration will provide an assessment of the UAE's adherence to this pledge by January 17, just days before the presidential transition to Donald Trump.
  • The RSF, accused of atrocities during Sudan’s ongoing civil war, controls large parts of the country, while the conflict has displaced over 11 million people and left millions at risk of famine.
  • The U.S. announced $200 million in additional humanitarian aid for Sudan, with officials warning of severe hunger and escalating humanitarian needs in the war-torn nation.
