UAE Certifies First Purpose-Built Commercial Vertiport

Regulator approval verifies infrastructure, safety, and emergency systems, signalling readiness for commercial eVTOL services by year-end.

Overview

  • The General Civil Aviation Authority certified VDX (also reported as DXV) on Tuesday as the world’s first purpose-built commercial vertiport after a full review of infrastructure, operational procedures, safety management and emergency preparedness.
  • The four-storey, 3,100 square-metre facility next to Dubai International Airport includes two take-off and landing pads, rapid charging for electric aircraft and passenger processing areas and is designed to handle about 170,000 passengers a year.
  • Skyports Infrastructure, Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority and the GCAA say VDX will act as the flagship hub while additional vertiports at Dubai Marina, Dubai Mall and Palm Jumeirah remain under construction.
  • Skyports and GCAA officials said the certification brings Dubai closer to launching commercial air taxi services, which authorities expect to begin before the end of 2026 if operators secure final approvals and service readiness is confirmed.
  • The project is linked to the UAE’s broader economic and transport agendas and complements Abu Dhabi’s plan for a 10-vertiport network, a development that could cut city travel times and open new tourism and mobility routes.
