UAB Jumps to 126th in CWUR Rankings as Spanish Universities Decline

Government underinvestment in research has weighed on Spain’s university system.

Overview

  • The UAB climbed from 196th to 126th place in the CWUR global rankings, placing it among the top 0.6 percent worldwide with strengths in faculty prestige, research quality and teaching.
  • Of the 53 Spanish universities assessed, 43 fell in the standings this year, a trend CWUR attributes to weakened research output and limited public funding.
  • Catalan campuses dominate Spain’s top tier, with five of the national top-10 spots held by UAB, Pompeu Fabra, Universitat de Barcelona, Rovira i Virgili and Ramon Llull.
  • For the first time, Chinese universities surpass U.S. institutions in CWUR’s top listings, with 98 percent of Chinese campuses improving and Harvard maintaining the global No. 1 rank.
  • CWUR evaluated 21,462 universities worldwide using metrics on teaching quality, research output and graduate employability.
