U5 Tunnel Breakthrough at Gotthardstraße Makes 1.1 km Section Walkable

The breakthrough clears the way for material deliveries so station fit-out can begin, with a tunnel‑boring machine slated for installation in 2029.

Overview

  • The tunnel under Gotthardstraße became continuously accessible on Wednesday, June 17, 2026, creating an uninterrupted 1.1‑kilometre stretch from Bahnhof Laim toward the planned Baumschule Laim station.
  • Three new logistics openings in the tunnel now let builders bring in concrete, steel and other materials needed to fit out the Baumschule Laim station and complete the tunnel toward Laimer Platz.
  • Project managers say the works recovered after earlier groundwater delays of about 12 months and are now roughly four months ahead of the revised plan; a roughly 80‑metre TBM is scheduled for placement in 2029 to bore toward Pasing and the Laim–Baumschule section is targeted to open around 2031.
  • With the underground work unbroken, surface crews will start restoring and redesigning Gotthardstraße to give more space to cyclists and return car lanes to the centre, and tram service will be kept running during construction.
  • The project uses deep excavation methods such as Schlitzwand‑Deckelbauweise and Düker structures to manage groundwater, includes preparatory Rohbau works for a future Freiham extension begun in May 2024, and has kept residents informed through site visits and an on‑site information centre.
