Typhoon No. 23 Strengthens on Eastward Track, Set to Near Izu Islands Oct. 12–13

The weather agency warns of violent winds capable of overturning vehicles in the Izu chain after recent record rains from Typhoon 22.

  • As of Oct. 12, the system is advancing east‑northeast south of Japan and is expected to intensify as it moves along the southern waters.
  • The Japan Meteorological Agency projects a close approach to the Izu Islands between Oct. 12 and 13 with a high risk of violent winds and very heavy rain.
  • Officials urge people to avoid nonessential outings and stay on strict alert for high waves, landslides, low‑lying inundation and river flooding.
  • Earlier, the typhoon tracked north near Minamidaito and approached Amami on Oct. 11, creating very unstable conditions over Okinawa, Amami and southern Kyushu.
  • Forecast seas feature dangerous swells, with waves around 6 meters near Amami and about 5 meters near Okinawa and southern Kyushu, and conditions may worsen along the forecast path.
