Typhoon No. 23 Stalls Near Amami as JMA Warns of Severe Impact Risk for Izu Islands Oct. 12–13

Forecasters expect the system to strengthen and curve east on Oct. 12, raising concern for already hard‑hit Izu communities following Typhoon No. 22’s recent deluge.

Overview

  • On Oct. 11, the Japan Meteorological Agency said Typhoon No. 23 was nearly stationary south of Amami, with alerts for strong winds, very high waves, and heavy rain across Amami and southern Kyushu.
  • JMA guidance projects an eastward turn on Oct. 12 with an east‑northeast track along waters south of Japan as the storm intensifies.
  • Forecasts indicate a close approach to the Izu Islands around Oct. 12–13, with strict warnings for violent winds and a risk of trucks being overturned on Oct. 12.
  • Moist, warm inflow is expected to leave the atmosphere very unstable over Okinawa, Amami, and southern Kyushu, heightening the dangers of landslides, river rises, and flooding.
  • Expected wave heights include 6 meters for Amami on Oct. 11 and 5 meters around Okinawa and southern Kyushu, following 4–5 meters reported on Oct. 10.
