Typhoon No. 23 Nears Daito Islands With High Winds and Heavy Rain Forecast

Officials warn of coastal flooding and landslide dangers as the storm pivots north toward Amami this weekend.

Overview

  • As of early Friday, the Japan Meteorological Agency placed the center about 200–210 km southeast to east of Minami-Daito, moving northwest near 20 km/h with central pressure around 1000–1002 hPa and sustained winds near 20 m/s (gusts about 30 m/s).
  • Forecasts call for closest approach to the Daito Islands on Oct. 10, then a northward turn toward Amami on Oct. 11 before curving east-northeast on Oct. 12, with a possible approach to the Izu Islands around Oct. 13.
  • JMA urges caution for very strong winds, high waves and torrential rain, highlighting risks of landslides, lowland inundation and river rises in Amami and southern Kyushu from Oct. 11–12.
  • Projected conditions include wave heights of 5 m around Okinawa and 4 m in Amami on Oct. 10, rising to 6 m in Amami and 5 m in Okinawa and southern Kyushu on Oct. 11, alongside forecast peak winds up to 25 m/s (gusts 35 m/s) in Amami on Oct. 11.
  • Ferry operators canceled or postponed some sailings linking Okinawa’s main island and outlying islands, including delays on Tomari–Minami/North Daito until Oct. 14 and partial cancellations on Azama–Kudaka, while airlines reported no cancellations at the time of reporting.
