Typhoon Kalmaegi Strikes Vietnam After Leaving More Than 100 Dead in the Philippines

Vietnam has ordered mass evacuations following rapid intensification over the South China Sea.

  • The storm made landfall near Quy Nhon in central Vietnam with winds near 200–205 km/h, bringing extreme rain, storm surge and flooding risks across provinces including Da Nang, Quang Ngai, Dak Lak, Gia Lai and Lam Dong.
  • Vietnamese authorities instructed roughly 300,000 people to evacuate and mobilized about 200,000 troops to support preparations and response.
  • In the Philippines, officials confirmed 114 deaths and 127 missing, while provincial tallies raise the overall death toll to about 140–142 after catastrophic flash floods in Cebu and Negros.
