Typhoon Kalmaegi Nears Eastern Philippines With Landfall Expected Late Monday

Preemptive evacuations seek to avert repeat coastal tragedies in a region hardened by past superstorms.

Overview

  • Kalmaegi was about 235 km east of Guiuan, Eastern Samar with sustained winds near 120 kph and stronger gusts, and forecasts call for further strengthening before a likely landfall late Monday or early Tuesday.
  • PAGASA raised Tropical Cyclone Wind Signals, including Signal No. 2 for parts of Eastern Samar, Siargao, Bucas Grande and Dinagat Islands, and issued gale warnings for very rough to high seas.
  • Officials ordered large-scale evacuations, including more than 70,000 people in Guiuan, Mercedes and Salcedo, forced relocations in some towns, and preemptive moves affecting 10,000–15,000 residents in the Dinagat Islands.
  • Civil defence and forecasters warned of life‑threatening storm surges up to about 3 meters, intense rainfall of 50–100 mm with local totals up to 200 mm, and heightened risks of flash floods and landslides.
  • Sea travel has been suspended in affected areas, schools and businesses closed in some provinces, emergency agencies placed on alert, and the storm is expected to cross the Visayas before re‑emerging over the West Philippine Sea toward Vietnam later in the week.
