Typhoon Kajiki Nears Vietnam as Hundreds of Thousands Evacuate

Officials warn of torrential rain with dangerous storm surge after rapid intensification.

  • Kajiki, packing sustained winds near 166 km/h, was forecast to make landfall in central Vietnam on Aug. 25 between Thanh Hoa and Ha Tinh, with authorities warning of torrential rain, storm surge and very high waves before the system moves toward Laos and northern Thailand.
  • Vietnam organized evacuations for roughly 586,000–587,000 residents in Thanh Hoa, Quang Tri, Thua Thien Hue and Da Nang, relocating more than 152,000 households from high‑risk areas.
  • Airports in Thanh Hoa and Quang Binh were closed and airlines canceled or rescheduled dozens of flights, with Vietnam Airlines and Vietjet adjusting operations across affected routes.
  • Coastal provinces banned fishing as nearly 60,000 boats with about 249,000 crew were ordered to port, and more than 49,000 vessels were already secured in harbors.
  • In China’s Hainan, Sanya shut businesses and public transport and about 20,000 residents were evacuated as the storm passed offshore, with preliminary counts indicating impacts to over 100,000 people.
