Typhoon Kajiki Kills at Least Three in Vietnam as Flooding Hits Hanoi

Officials cite thousands of damaged homes, widespread outages, plus ongoing flood and landslide alerts.

Overview

  • Authorities report at least three deaths and ten injuries after Kajiki made landfall on August 25 between Nghe An and Ha Tinh with winds of about 133 km/h.
  • More than 6,000 homes were damaged, roughly 18,000 trees were uprooted, about 330 power masts fell, and over 1.3 million households temporarily lost electricity.
  • Torrential rain flooded parts of Hanoi and disrupted traffic, while the system weakened to a tropical low over Laos with warnings for flash floods and landslides still in place.
  • Vietnam had mobilized over 16,500 soldiers and more than 100,000 responders, ordered mass evacuations in coastal provinces, halted shipping, and closed airports with dozens of flights canceled.
  • The storm earlier affected China’s Hainan with over 100,000 people impacted, and Thailand’s weather service warned of heavy rain across 35 provinces as the remnants track west.
