Typhoon Fonwon Edges North Toward Okinawa as JMA Warns of Very Rough Seas on Nov. 13

Forecasters attribute the heaviest rain to warm, moist inflow along a frontal zone over the Ryukyu region.

  • The storm’s center is forecast to be near southwest of Yonaguni by the morning of Nov. 13, with a 70% probability of remaining within the official forecast circle.
  • Okinawa is already seeing active rain and localized heavy downpours, and officials urge vigilance for landslides and inundation on Nov. 12.
  • Very rough seas are expected on Nov. 13 with wave heights around 6 meters and strong to violent northerly or northwesterly winds, particularly across the Miyako and Yaeyama islands, with coastal waters turning rough to very rough including the Daito area.
  • JMA highlights additional hazards of lightning and possible tornadic gusts, with rainfall projected up to 120 mm through 6 a.m. Nov. 13 and a further 100 mm in the following 24 hours, and maximum sustained winds near 20 m/s on Thursday.
