Typhoon Bualoi Slams Vietnam’s North-Central Coast, Leaving At Least Nine Dead and Dozens Missing

Forecasts of a fast-moving, multi-hazard storm prompted large-scale evacuations.

Overview

  • Landfall occurred late Sunday into early Monday in the Ha TinhNghe An area, with winds near 117–133 km/h at impact before weakening inland toward Laos.
  • Officials and state media reported at least nine deaths and 12–17 fishermen missing after boats sank or were disabled off Quang Tri as waves reached up to eight metres.
  • Four coastal airports were closed with hundreds of flights canceled or delayed, and tens of thousands of residents were moved to shelters ahead of the storm.
  • More than 300,000 households lost power as roofs were torn off, poles were toppled and flooding swamped streets in cities including Hue and across central provinces.
  • Forecasters warned of 500–600 mm of rain in some areas through Oct. 1, with continued risks of flash floods and landslides; Bualoi had earlier killed at least 20 people in the Philippines.
