Overview
- Bavi has weakened in peak intensity but grown much larger after an eyewall replacement cycle, and forecasters in the region say its broad wind field will expose a wide area to gale- and storm‑force winds.
- Forecast agencies place the storm on a northwest track toward waters north of Taiwan and the Fujian–Zhejiang coast of eastern China and expect landfall along that coast within the next few days.
- Taiwan’s Central Weather Administration warns of extreme rainfall in northern and central mountain areas with local totals up to about 900 mm and major risks of landslides, flash floods and coastal inundation.
- Taiwan has placed roughly 29,000 military personnel on standby and pre-positioned helicopters, rescue vehicles and thousands of pumps while Chinese authorities have issued coastal landfall forecasts and stepped up preparations.
- Bavi already caused severe damage in Guam and the Northern Mariana Islands, and scientists note that warming sea temperatures and a developing El Niño have increased the odds of larger, wetter storms this season.
