Tyne and Wear Metro Restores Service at Reduced Frequency After Depot Power Fault

The operator cites a power cable fault at Gosforth depot, with repairs under way to restore normal frequency.

Overview

  • Metro services were fully suspended before dawn after Nexus reported a depot power fault just before 5am.
  • Trains are now running to all destinations every 24 minutes, covering AirportSouth Hylton and St James–South Shields.
  • Nexus arranged ticket acceptance on Go North East, Arriva and Stagecoach buses, the Shields Ferry and Northern trains between Sunderland and Newcastle.
  • The disruption was attributed to a power supply cable issue at Stadler’s Gosforth depot and the operator issued an apology.
  • Repairs continue with more trains expected to be reintroduced through the afternoon and a near‑full service targeted for the evening peak, with early operations supported by battery‑capable trains.
