Ty Sage, Mistakenly Freed Murder Suspect, Recaptured on Oregon Coast

The sheriff attributes the mistaken release to a misinterpreted court order, with an internal review underway.

Overview

  • Deputies and the U.S. Marshals Fugitive Task Force arrested Sage around 1 p.m. Thursday at a gas station in Florence, Oregon, without use of force.
  • Sage will be returned to the Multnomah County Detention Center on a no-bail hold following his erroneous release on Monday.
  • Officials say jail staff acted in good faith after an initial Sept. 17 court order appeared to list $5,000 bail despite a judge’s ruling to deny bail.
  • Sheriff Nicole Morrisey O’Donnell apologized for the error, called it unacceptable, and pledged process changes after a full review.
  • Sage is charged with second-degree murder and first-degree robbery in the 2021 killing of 15-year-old Lowgunn Ivey; alleged accomplice Kevin Rivas-Ramirez remains in custody.
