TxDOT to Reduce I-10 Westbound to Two Lanes Oct. 24 for $400 Million Elevation Work

TxDOT says the elevation will reduce chronic flooding on the White Oak Bayou stretch, addressing the low-clearance Houston Avenue Bridge repeatedly struck this year.

Overview

  • Beginning Oct. 24, westbound I-10 between I-45 North and Houston Avenue will narrow to two lanes, with the setup expected to last until mid-2026.
  • The I-45 southbound connector to I-10 westbound, including the HOV lane, will remain fully closed until mid-2026, and the I-10 eastbound connector to I-45 northbound will stay closed through mid-2028.
  • The project will raise the I-10 mainlanes above the White Oak Bayou floodplain between Heights Boulevard and I-45 and will rebuild the HOV lanes.
  • Plans call for relocating and reconstructing the Houston Avenue Bridge beneath the new elevated lanes, with demolition of the current bridge expected in early 2027.
  • TxDOT cites 10 flood inundations of this corridor since 1992 and 72 bridge strikes this year, and urges drivers to follow posted detours and stay alert to changing traffic patterns.
