Twycross Zoo Welcomes First Bonobo Born in the UK

An EAZA-led breeding program produced the birth to strengthen a carefully managed, genetically diverse population for an endangered ape.

Overview

  • The male infant was born on September 11 to first-time mother Yuli at Twycross Zoo in Leicestershire.
  • Twycross is the only UK zoo caring for bonobos and manages roughly 10% of the species’ European zoo population.
  • Yuli arrived from Vallée des Singes in France in 2023 as part of the continent-wide breeding plan coordinated by EAZA.
  • The newborn is already viewable to visitors, with images showing him clinging to his mother released by the zoo.
  • Bonobos are listed as endangered on the IUCN Red List, a status the zoo says heightens the conservation significance of the birth.
