Two-Year-Old Russian Boy Dies After Box Jellyfish Sting at Langkawi Beach

Hospitals had to obtain antivenom from Penang, highlighting treatment gaps on the tourist island.

Overview

  • The child, identified as Vladimir Iakubanets, was stung on Nov 15 in shallow water at Chenang Beach and stopped breathing within seconds, his father said.
  • Bystanders and his father performed CPR before beach rescuers applied vinegar and sent him to a clinic, then to Sultanah Maliha Hospital in Langkawi.
  • He was later transferred to Sultanah Bahiyah Hospital in Alor Setar, where he was resuscitated but died at 9.46am on Nov 19 after severe complications.
  • A Langkawi civil defence spokesman said antivenom was not available locally and had to be sourced from Penang for the hospital treating the boy.
  • The parents say they will not pursue legal action and will repatriate his ashes to Russia, as state fisheries officials confirm box jellyfish are present off Langkawi this year at moderate levels.
