Two Workers Rescued After Truss Collapse at Columbia County Highway Shop in Portage

Officials have not yet determined what caused the failure.

  • The incident occurred around 2 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 16, at the Highway 16 construction site in Portage, Wisconsin.
  • About 90 of roughly 100 roof trusses collapsed during installation, resulting in a partial structural failure.
  • Each worker was trapped in the basket of an aerial lift approximately 25 to 35 feet above the ground.
  • Portage Fire Rescue used a ladder truck and rope system to extricate both workers, who were evaluated on scene.
  • One worker was pinned beneath about 10 trusses, no injuries were reported, and Portage Police assisted at the scene.
