Two Workers Killed in Separate Heavy-Machinery Accidents in Germany as Probes Begin

Investigators are reviewing procedures to determine causes, including possible safety lapses.

Overview

  • A 61-year-old died at a B317 construction site between Todtnau-Fahl and Feldberg after being overrun by a work machine weighing more than five tonnes on Tuesday around 11:00.
  • Emergency services responded to the Black Forest site with police, paramedics and a rescue helicopter, and German Red Cross crisis teams supported coworkers.
  • The construction area was separated from public traffic, and the Verkehrspolizei Weil am Rhein took over the investigation into the sequence and cause.
  • In a separate incident in Recklinghausen, a 47-year-old was fatally struck by a wheel loader inside a company hall on Tuesday at about 15:30, and the driver suffered shock.
  • Police say the Recklinghausen case is a tragic accident with no suspicion of intent, and the labor inspectorate is involved in the inquiry.
