Two Workers Die in Nigdi Duct That Killed Three Last Year

The NCSC has ordered a 15-day fact-finding report to determine whether officials or utilities failed to enforce basic confined-space safety.

Overview

  • Late on Wednesday night two men, identified as Amol Shinde and Manoj Baburao Shinde, were found unconscious inside an underground BSNL-linked duct near Lokmanya Hospital and were later declared dead at YCM Hospital.
  • Pimpri-Chinchwad fire brigade crews pulled both workers from the chamber after police alerted them and handed the bodies to investigators for post-mortem and cause-of-death determination.
  • The site is the same duct where three workers died on August 15, 2025, bringing the total deaths at this location to five in about a year and prompting local anger about repeated safety lapses.
  • Police say they are probing why the men entered the duct, who authorised the work and whether proper safety procedures were in place, and they will question BSNL staff and other connected parties.
  • The NCSC has issued notices to the municipal commissioner, police commissioner and social-welfare department and warned of further action if a written fact-finding and action report is not submitted within 15 days, which could trigger administrative or legal consequences.
