On Friday a young male wolf was struck on the B206 in Kreis Segeberg and was euthanized on site by a Wolfsmanagement employee using a firearm, according to the LfU. A second wolf, a female likely in her second year, was found dead on the A1 near the Barsbüttel exit in the direction of Hamburg. Both carcasses have been transferred to the Leibniz Institute for Zoo and Wildlife Research in Berlin for necropsy to assess health status and origin. State monitoring teams note that several packs and roaming individuals now use the region, increasing the chance of road crossings that pose a major danger. Coordinator Jens Matzen said the two crashes show no pattern and were bad luck, while experts advise drivers to be especially alert in known wolf areas at dusk.
