Two Uncontained Wildfires Near Durango Force Evacuations

Overview

  • The Elkhorn fire ignited Saturday as a structure blaze and expanded to about 314 acres with zero containment as of Monday, moving away from homes.
  • The Rim Road fire on the Southern Ute Reservation has scorched about 112 acres with no containment while crews drop retardant by air, and nearby wells and gas lines were shut off as a safety precaution.
  • Mandatory evacuation orders remain in effect for three zones defined by Stevens Creek, County Road 253, County Road 250 and the Animas River, while two additional zones are on pre-evacuation alert.
  • At least 181 firefighters supported by four helicopters from federal, state and tribal agencies are coordinating ground crews with aerial resources to halt fire spread.
  • Escalante Middle School serves as an emergency shelter, and the Southern Ute Indian Tribe urged residents to avoid roadside stops that impede response efforts.
