Two Unclaimed Victims Identified in Iztapalapa Tanker Explosion as Search for Relatives Continues

Prosecutors used fingerprint matches to confirm two previously unclaimed victims, with relatives of one now located.

Overview

  • Mexico City’s attorney general identified Laura Lorena Barrera de la Torre via INE fingerprints and located her family in Jalisco, while Gilberto Aarón León Méndez was identified through penitentiary records and authorities are still trying to find his relatives.
  • The official toll remains 31 dead, with 13 people hospitalized and 40 discharged, according to the latest evening update from the city health department.
  • The Sept. 10 incident involved a tanker carrying more than 49,000 liters of LP gas that overturned near the Puente de la Concordia, releasing a gas cloud that ignited and caused damage out to roughly 180 meters.
  • Victims continue to receive care across IMSS, ISSSTE and other hospitals, and a pediatric patient was transferred to Shriners Hospitals for Children in Galveston for specialized burn treatment.
  • City officials say a proposal to tighten rules for hazardous cargo transport, including gas tankers, is being prepared in coordination with forthcoming federal measures.
