Overview
- Police say a 2014 Camry driven by a 14-year-old and a 4Runner driven by a 17-year-old collided head-on around 2 a.m. Saturday at Stacy Trail and Ivywood Trail in Chisago City.
- Fifteen-year-old passenger Jax Affolter died at the scene and the 17-year-old SUV driver later died at Regions Hospital; three other teens were hospitalized with serious injuries, including one airlifted.
- Alcohol was found at the scene and is under review as a possible factor, with the Minnesota State Patrol’s reconstruction unit assisting the Lakes Area Police Department.
- A mother of an injured 18-year-old, identified as Ashton Oseth, said the teens had been at a nearby bonfire before the crash and identified the deceased 17-year-old as Jonathan Schwarz, while noting her son and Schwarz were not suspected of drinking.
- Investigators are also examining how the 14-year-old obtained the car as the community holds vigils, hockey tributes and fundraisers and the school district expands mental-health support.
