Two Suspects Dead After Hostage Standoff and Police Assault in Mar del Plata

A full forensic review will determine how the two suspects died after police rescued three hostages.

Overview

  • Police moved to detain Matías “Pata de Palo” Cornejo, wanted for a May homicide, when an initial exchange of gunfire erupted in Barrio Libertad.
  • A DDI officer was shot in the leg and taken to the Hospital Interzonal General de Agudos for treatment.
  • Cornejo and accomplices barricaded themselves in a nearby house and held three people for nearly three hours as UTOI, GAD and the explosives unit surrounded the site.
  • Around 20:00, officers breached the entrance using a grenade, rescued the hostages, found Cornejo dead inside, and located Nahuel Niz gravely wounded; Niz later died at Higa.
  • A third man, Flavio Basualdo, was detained on charges of illegal deprivation of liberty and violation of domicile, while prosecutors ordered autopsies and ballistic tests after seizing three 9mm pistols, a PAM-type submachine gun, ammunition, a stolen motorcycle, drugs and phones.
