Two Students Drown in Dahisar Quarry

Police are investigating whether alcohol or broken access controls led to the deaths, prompting calls to physically remediate the pits

Overview

  • Two 19-year-old college students, identified as Piyush Gupta and Om Ankush Singh, drowned while swimming in a water-filled abandoned quarry in Dahisar East on Saturday.
  • The Mumbai Fire Brigade recovered the bodies from a section about 10–15 feet deep after a 10:26 a.m. call and the youths were declared brought dead at BDBA Shatabdi Hospital.
  • The victims had gone to the quarry with two classmates; the two other students tried to rescue them and survived, then alerted passersby and authorities.
  • Dahisar police have registered an accidental death report and are probing the exact sequence of events, including whether alcohol consumption played a role, though that link is not confirmed.
  • Residents and local officials say warning boards and a check post exist but alternate routes let people enter the pits, and they are urging physical remediation such as filling pits and clearer enforcement within the National Park jurisdiction.
