Two Students Arrested After Weapons Found at Mesa Ridge High School

Authorities report no ongoing threat or intent to attack.

Overview

  • Around 9:15 a.m. Friday, reports of guns prompted a School Resource Officer to locate and confiscate a handgun and an airsoft pistol at the Security-Widefield campus.
  • Two minors were detained at the scene and later booked into a juvenile detention center on multiple misdemeanor counts, including possession of a handgun by a juvenile and unlawful possession of a weapon on school grounds.
  • The school was placed in a security hold as additional deputies and a K-9 team responded to investigate other reports, which were checked and found to be unsubstantiated.
  • Officials said no students or staff were hurt, and investigators determined there was no plan to harm others.
  • Widefield School District 3 offered counseling, and many parents picked up students early as the episode followed a deadly shooting at Evergreen High School two days earlier.
