Two Straight Nights of Late Frosts Hit Mendoza’s Valle de Uco and South

Authorities will take 10 to 15 days of field checks to determine crop losses.

Overview

  • Minimums fell to about -2 to -3°C in parts of Valle de Uco and down to -5.7°C in Villa Atuel, with freezing lasting up to four hours in some areas.
  • Impacts were reported in La Consulta, Pareditas, Vista Flores, Colonia Las Rosas, central San Rafael, General Alvear and isolated low-lying properties in the East such as Las Catitas.
  • Stone fruits including cherries, late peaches, plums and apricots show damage at sensitive stages, with tender vine shoots also affected and nuts showing greater tolerance.
  • Growers deployed irrigation, heaters and burning covers to defend crops, yet early observations confirm harm in orchards and some vineyards.
  • This was the spring’s third late frost, and provincial contingency teams are monitoring conditions as frost risk is expected to persist into early November.
